Through Christ, With Christ, For Christ

20 Aug
This has been an interesting couple of weeks.  I have been fighting this sinus/cold stuff for too long.  Last weekend, it tried to take over me.  I lost my voice and that is not the best thing for a preacher.  However, I have a wonderful church family who jumped right in to help.  Penny helped to open the service, Tammy helped to lead all the singing, the choir did an amazing job as usual, Nate and Jonah helped to lead the doxology and with offering, Lynsey read the scripture, and the deacons led communion.  The service would not have been the same without the willingness of everyone.
As those who know me already know, I am quite stubborn.  So, I attempted to speak what the Lord had laid on my heart to share.  We made it through and here are some of the major points from the message:
We have been looking over the past couple of weeks at scriptures that many of us know well and can quote, but don’t really stop to understand what the scripture is telling us.  So, to understand the full context for which Paul is writing in our scripture today, let’s read Philippians 4:10-19
Instantly, we pick out Phil 4:13 – but let’s look at all the Paul is telling the church when he says this…
First, he is telling them about something very crucial to the Christian life (and truly to life in general)…contentment.  That says that no matter the circumstances (good or bad), we are okay as long as we are with the Lord.  The grace that He has given us is good, no matter what.  We don’t require pretty, shiny things…we don’t need to keep up with anyone else or worry about what someone else has…
If we are content just to be a child of God and to follow Him, that takes care of many of the sins which can take us in so easily…lust, envy, pride, greed, coveting…
When Paul said that he could do all things – all things in contentment, just being content to be in the will of God…doing the right thing
Notice – he can do all things THROUGH Christ because He is doing the will of God…which means he is doing things WITH Christ…which means he is doing all things FOR Christ!
When we are in the will of God and following Him, we can do all things because He will absolutely give us the strength to do His will and walk in His way…
That doesn’t mean we have strength to do what we want, when we want, the way we want it…that contradicts what we just read…
We also read about how the Philippian Church supported Paul and the ministry…when they had the resources, they used them for his ministry because they believed in what he was doing.
Because they were listening to God and sending aid as the Lord was leading and providing for them, then Paul was able to do the work of the Lord…
He told them that God would supply their needs because they were being faithful stewards of what they had been given…not because they gave to him…but because they gave to God and God used what they had
God absolutely gives strength to the powerless…provides for the needs of His people…but all of this taken into the perspective of being in the will of God and being content to be there…
No room for pride or envy or greed – just grace and love and joy…If God leads you to it, He will lead you through it!
As we consider these popular verses in the book of Philippians, let us consider how we can do all things THROUGH Christ, WITH Christ and FOR Christ!!
